Summary

The principal is the instructional leader for his or her building and is responsible for the daily operation of the building.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

An individual who holds this position must:

 

  • Establish and maintain an effective learning climate in the school
  • Develop the Building Improvement Plan, aligned with the District Comprehensive School Improvement Plan
  • Supervision of the instructional process
  • Assist the teachers in continuous development of curriculum materials
  • Implement the building level district testing program
  • Supervise the guidance program to enhance the individual student’s education and development
  • Support of the mentoring and Cognitive Cardinals new teacher support programs
  • Conduct regular classroom visits
  • Evaluate certified staff according to district adopted teacher evaluation model
  • Supervise and evaluate non-certified staff
  • Train and support non-certified staff to support job duty expectations
  • Make hiring recommendations to the Board
  • Establish guides for proper student conduct and maintain student discipline
  • Attend and assist with supervision of student activities and events, home and away
  • Implement the professional development plan
  • Maintain building records
  • Prepare and manage the building budget
  • Develop positive interaction with students
  • Administer student discipline
  • Develop effective communication with staff, parents, and the community
  • Prepare the faculty and student handbooks and make recommendations to the Superintendent and Board of Education
  • Prepare all reports and documents as prescribed by law
  • Assist with the administration of meal service and the free and reduced lunch program in the building in conjunction with the Food Service Director
  • Maintain and control all funds generated by student activities, clubs, and organizations
  • Supervise the building summer school program
  • Follow all Board policies
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Superintendent

 

An individual who holds this position is expected to attend:

Board meetings

Student activities and events

IEP meetings, as appropriate

 

Supervisory Duties

Has supervisory responsibility over all building staff

 

Qualifications

Education

Master’s degree or higher in educational administration

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid Missouri principal’s certificate for the appropriate grade levels

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Skills and Abilities

Language

An individual who holds this position must have the ability to:

  • Present information to staff members, other administrators, and the Board of Education
  • Respond to common questions and complaints
  • Interview students and staff
  • Read, analyze and interpret professional journals, government memos, Board policy, administrative procedure and statutes
  • Write newsletter articles, staff memos, and ordinary business correspondence
  • Keep information confidential when required by law, policy or a particular situation

 

Computation

Ability to compute ratios, percentages, and create and interpret graphs and figures

 

Reasoning

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

 

Technology

Basic computer word processing, spreadsheet, and research skills

Ability to access and create reports using the district’s student information software

Physical Demands

An individual who holds this position must frequently move in and around buildings and grounds to visit classrooms, attend meetings, and supervise bus loading and unloading areas, as well as sit for an hour or more at a time.

 

Hearing

Must be able to hear a conversation in a noisy environment

Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position
